GLP-1 Medications Approved for Adolescents

A comparison of FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for teens: what's available, how they differ, and what the clinical data shows

Written by the Thryvwell Care Team · Medically reviewed by Dr. Glenda Pettaway, MD, MS, FAAP · Updated July 2026 · 5 min read

Not all GLP-1 medications are the same, and not all are approved for adolescents. Currently, two GLP-1 receptor agonists have received FDA approval for chronic weight management in adolescents aged 12 and older, Wegovy® and Saxenda®. A third, Zepbound®, is expected to receive adolescent approval soon. Here's what parents should know about each option.

Thryvwell prescribes only FDA-approved GLP-1 medications (Wegovy® and Saxenda®). We never use compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide.

FDA-approved options

Four GLP-1 injection pens side by side: Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound
GLP-1 injection pens available in the US. Not all are FDA-approved for ages 12–17 — Wegovy® and Saxenda® are the approved adolescent options; Ozempic® and Mounjaro® are approved for type 2 diabetes, not adolescent weight management.

Wegovy® (semaglutide)

Manufacturer: Novo Nordisk
Approval: FDA-approved for adolescents 12+ (2022)
Mechanism: GLP-1 receptor agonist
Dosing: Once-weekly subcutaneous injection
Clinical trial: STEP TEENS: 16.1% BMI reduction vs 0.6% placebo over 68 weeks
Most studied GLP-1 in adolescent populations. Gold standard for pediatric obesity pharmacotherapy.

Saxenda® (liraglutide)

Manufacturer: Novo Nordisk
Approval: FDA-approved for adolescents 12+ (2020)
Mechanism: GLP-1 receptor agonist
Dosing: Once-daily subcutaneous injection
Clinical trial: SCALE Teens: 2.65% BMI reduction vs 1.6% increase with placebo over 56 weeks
First GLP-1 approved for adolescent obesity. Daily dosing may be less convenient than weekly alternatives.

Zepbound® (tirzepatide)

Manufacturer: Eli Lilly
Approval: Not yet FDA-approved for adolescents, approval expected soon
Mechanism: Dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist
Dosing: Once-weekly subcutaneous injection
Clinical trial: SURMOUNT-Jr: up to 20% BMI reduction over 72 weeks
Not yet available for adolescents. Thryvwell does not currently prescribe Zepbound but will evaluate it once FDA approval is granted for ages 12+.

A note on compounded medications

You may have seen advertisements for "compounded semaglutide" or "generic GLP-1" at lower prices. These are not FDA-approved, have not been tested in adolescent clinical trials, and lack the quality controls of brand-name medications.

Thryvwell exclusively prescribes FDA-approved medications with established safety profiles in adolescent populations. When it comes to developing bodies, clinical evidence matters more than cost savings.

How your child's physician chooses

The medication selection is individualized based on:

Your child's specific clinical profile and medical history
Insurance coverage and formulary requirements
Dosing convenience (weekly vs. daily)
Individual response and tolerance
Available clinical trial data for their age group

This isn't a one-size-fits-all decision. Your child's physician will discuss the options and recommend the best fit during the clinical intake.
