How to Know If Your Child Qualifies for GLP-1 Treatment

Eligibility criteria explained in plain language - what qualifies, what doesn't, and how the screening process works.

The first question most parents have: "Does my child even qualify?" Here's a clear breakdown of the eligibility criteria for GLP-1 treatment in adolescents, based on FDA approval guidelines and AAP clinical practice recommendations.

Core eligibility criteria

To be eligible for GLP-1 treatment through Thryvwell, your child must meet the following baseline criteria:

Age:12-17 years old
BMI:At or above the 95th percentile for age and sex (clinical obesity)
Prior effort:History of attempted lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise, behavioral changes)
Medical clearance:No contraindications to GLP-1 therapy (assessed during clinical intake)

Understanding BMI percentiles

For children and adolescents, BMI is interpreted differently than for adults. Instead of fixed cutoffs (like 30 for adult obesity), pediatric BMI uses age- and sex-specific percentiles:

Healthy weight5th to 84th percentile
Overweight85th to 94th percentile
Obesity95th percentile and above ✓
Severe obesity120% of the 95th percentile ✓

Your child's pediatrician can tell you their current BMI percentile, or you can use the CDC's BMI calculator for children and teens. Our eligibility screener also calculates this automatically based on the information you provide.

Wondering if this applies to your child? The 2-minute eligibility check tells you if Thryvwell could be a fit. No commitment, no payment info.

Who may not be eligible

GLP-1 treatment may not be appropriate for adolescents who:

Are under 12 years of age (insufficient clinical trial data)
Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 syndrome
Have a history of pancreatitis
Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
Have an active eating disorder (requires specialized treatment first)
Have a BMI below the 95th percentile (overweight but not obese)

If your child doesn't meet eligibility criteria, our clinical team can discuss alternative approaches and recommend appropriate resources.

How the screening process works

Thryvwell's eligibility process is designed to be quick and low-pressure:

1
Online screener (2 minutes)
Basic questions about age, height, weight, and medical history. You get a preliminary result on the spot.
2
Early access list
Enrollment opens October 1, 2026. If the initial criteria are met, you can reserve a founding member spot now, and we email you the moment enrollment opens.
3
Intake visit with a physician
Once enrollment opens, a physician completes a comprehensive assessment by video to confirm eligibility and discuss treatment options. The screener never decides your care — a clinician does.

There's no commitment at any stage. The screener is free, and you can decide not to proceed at any point.
