How to read a BMI percentile

A percentile compares one teen's BMI to thousands of others the same age and sex. The 90th percentile means their BMI is higher than 90 percent of peers.

Below 5th percentileUnderweight
5th to 84th percentileHealthy weight
85th to 94th percentileOverweight
95th and above percentileObesity

Categories per CDC BMI-for-age growth charts. For ages 18 and older, clinicians use adult BMI categories instead of percentiles.

Questions parents ask about teen BMI

Percentiles are calculated with the CDC BMI-for-age growth charts, using the CDC 2000 LMS method at or below the 95th percentile and the 2022 CDC extended BMI method above it.
